ABSTRACT

Automatic meter reading (AMR) can be considered as the predecessor of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and it allows utilities to perform some basic readout functions of a customer's meter. In order to structure the information and functionality of some physical metering equipment and to control access to it, COmpanion Specification for Energy Metering (COSEM) standardized building blocks can be combined to model a metering device in a hierarchical structure. Distribution Line Message Specification (DLMS)/COSEM is positioning itself as the all-round contender for smart grid communication. The Smart Message Language (SML) is a communication protocol for data acquisition and parameterization developed by the German utility companies RWE, EON, and EnBW. In reality, data communication takes place through a communication protocol stack and via the communication media. As the communication protocol stack is completely independent of the application layer, the servers and clients may independently support one or more communication profiles to communicate over various media.
