ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with a definition of marine geotechnology and an appreciation of its historical development. This chapter is organized into five major sections: (1.2) “Definition and Scope of Marine Geotechnology,” (1.3) “Origin of Marine Geotechnology (1786-1899),” (1.4) “Twentieth-Century Precedents (1900-1949),” (1.5) “Development of Marine Geotechnology (1950-2000),” and (1.7) “Interand Multidisciplinary Aspects.”
