ABSTRACT

The best way to start this discussion is to share a formative experience. In 2005, as an executive-in-residence at the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, I was working with a company called Blue Belt Technologies and their founding CEO Craig Markovitz. Blue Belt Technology (www.bluebelttech.com) has the ability to incorporate surgical planning and navigation with a hand-held robotic-assisted bone preparation device. The technology was developed at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University with commercial development directed by company cofounder Branislav Jaramaz, Ph.D. From the very beginning, the company knew its technology would be very impactful on hip, knee, and shoulder surgery.
