ABSTRACT

Introduction Production of ethanol from maize feedstock has grown enormously since the beginning of this century. This growth has been most rapid in the United States, which is at the same time the world’s largest producer of maize and of maize ethanol. For that reason this chapter concentrates on the growth of, and prospects for, the conversion of maize to ethanol in the US. It emphasizes the role of government policies in the rapid expansion of the industry and assesses the consequences of withdrawal of that support.
