ABSTRACT
The majority of abdominal injuries sustained in mainland Britain follow road traffic accidents. Recognition of the presence of an intra-abdominal injury requiring surgery is far more important than its precise definition. A high index of suspicion is necessary, based on the history, especially the mechanism of injury and associated injuries, as physical signs can be misleading initially.
