ABSTRACT

Oral levonorgestrel (LNG), oral ulipristal acetate and copper IUD are forms of EC, but not Mirena IUS. LNG EC is taken as a single dose of 1500 micrograms (mcg) as soon as possible or within 72 hours of unprotected coitus, which is highly efficacious and prevents ~85% of expected pregnancies. It can be used more than once in a cycle if clinically indicated. Single dose of Ulipristal acetate 30 mg is licensed for EC up to 120 hours after UPSI; it is as efficacious as LNG EC but not recommended more than once in a cycle. Copper IUD works by inhibiting fertilization by causing direct toxicity and is 99% effective, if given within 5 days of unprotected coitus.
