ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION The infectious process encompasses a highly complex series of events which surround the relationship between the host attempting to defend itself against the offensive properties of the parasite. Virulence factors available to the micro-organism will be combated by a wide range of specific and non-specific defence mechanisms, and the result of this encounter, ‘the microbiological battleground’, will determine whether or not infectious disease is established.
