ABSTRACT
Although open surgery still plays a significant and important role in urological practice, there is an everincreasing emphasis on endoscopic techniques in both diagnosis and therapy. Urologists need to understand the workings of the instruments that they use in order to realize fully the potential and the limitations of the sophisticated technology that is available. An historical perspective is invaluable in the appreciation of what exists today.
