ABSTRACT
Like all true narratives, the stories of cop-killers are varied and complex. Reducing any human being’s history and motivation to a series of short paragraphs, as has been done in this work, will always present a risk of poor portrayal. The aim of this book is not to provide a complete history of each offender, but rather to present a snapshot of the circumstances, identity, and factors that may have led to each offender’s decision to kill a police officer on a given day, within a given encounter. This approach presupposes that the truth of these incidents can become known and that the focus can be narrowed to each offender and then broadened again to encompass groups of offenders by certain characteristics. It is for the reader to decide if this is an accurate-enough accounting of these incidents.
