ABSTRACT
Some recent approaches highlight the importance of riparian wetlands for their outer river catchment (Bendjoudi et al., 2002; Blackwell et al., 2006; Hattermann et al., 2006). Other works reported embedded models into a catchment framework (Krause and Bronstert 2004; Krause and Bronstert 2005; Hattermann, Krysanova et al. 2006), conceived under the European Water Framework Directive (EC, 2000a). In a similar context, some assessments on water quantity and quality in wetlands within a river basin have been published, mostly in the northern hemisphere (Arheimer and Wittgren 2002; Wang, Shang et al. 2010), even combining modeling with modern remote sensing technologies (van Griensven et al., 2008).
