The basic principles, designs, and physical and chemical behavior of Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBDs) are described. DBDs are characterized by the presence of an insulating material in the discharge gap, which allows the generation of nonthermal plasma at elevated pressure. Established applications of this discharge type are summarized, and potential future applications are explored. In particular, ozone generation, radiation sources, surface treatment, pollutant degradation, and biomedical applications are discussed.
