ABSTRACT

Nonthermal plasma dielectric barrier discharges are one of many tools in the toolkit of the biomaterials scientist. This entry discusses at length the progress that has been made in this field since the early 2000’s. The entry focuses on both plasma activation and plasma grafting/polymerization and does so from the point of view of the biomaterials scientist: how to improve the surface properties of a biomaterial [metal and (biodegradable) polymer] without altering its needed bulk properties. The entry is written at an introductory level but still tries to focus on developments from the leading scientists in this field.
