ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the value of Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound beyond just the “pretty face,” where much skill needs to be acquired and many techniques need to be mastered to use volume sonography to its fullest potential in evaluating the fetal face. The fetal face is an area where 3D ultrasound has been proven to be of added clinical value in comparison to 2D sonography. While the patient and family members are eager to see the fetal face, imaging of this structure by the physician is important to exclude facial abnormalities that at times may be isolated or may present as part of a syndrome. Volume sonography has an important role in the clarification of abnormalities involving the fetal face. It also has a great role in early reassurance, which may be possible from the first trimester, to ease the anxiety of families having prior affected offspring.
