ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the various topics of urban design since it was one of the first cities built after the revolution in the United States with a strong European influence. In the United States, cities on the eastern coast were developed with a European influence with regard to how roads and other infrastructure were designed. Urban design is the process of designing and shaping groups of buildings, streets, public spaces, neighborhoods, districts, and entire cities with the goal of making urban areas functional, attractive, and sustainable. If an urban areas in a viable location with desirable retail shops and restaurants, then the project should be economically viable if construction costs were kept in check. Recent increases in gas prices, a concern for environmental issues, and changing social values have returned the emphasis of urban development toward the promotion of pedestrian traffic and social interaction.
