ABSTRACT

Every once in a while, on very large cases, we would use informants who would actually testify, but that was rare. Most of our informants were “mere tipsters,” thus guaranteeing the protection of their identity in court. Yet that never stopped the defense attorneys from trying to discover who they were. On a couple of occasions over the years, a judge had ordered me to identify the informant or the case would be dismissed. We chose both times to dismiss. This case was different.
