Investigator Ross Jennings’s Story Honestly, I loved my job, but there was one aspect of it I just hated. About once a quarter, the citizen complaints would force my vice squad to work the mall restrooms. Around lunchtime most days, gay men would frequent the bathrooms looking for anonymous sex. This problem was common across the country in malls and public parks. Besides the social problems this caused, it was illegal-either misdemeanor lewd behavior or felony solicitation to commit sodomy. Sure, sodomy was an ancient law on the books, never enforced between consenting adults in the privacy of their home, but it was a good way for us to keep sex out of the public bathrooms.
