ABSTRACT

There is no “problem” that cannot be solved in the safety, health, and loss prevention area when sufcient effort, creativity, and diligence are provided to nd a solution. Problems abound in the areas of safety, health, and loss prevention and encompass virtually every conceivable aspect of the operations, including human difculties, machinery malfunctions, environmental releases, energy controls, chemical hazards, and a number of other hazards and potential risks. Safety and loss prevention managers are often inundated on a daily basis with the need to “put out res” and manage the function. When a problem arises, the solution is often one of putting a “BandAid” on the problem or putting the problem on a back burner because a number of other problems are waiting in line. In essence, the “fast x” or solutions such as “maybe if I let it alone it will go away” are frequently utilized because of other considerations such as lack of time, money, or manpower.
