ABSTRACT

Previous chapters have addressed the central concepts pertaining to a discrete event simulation (DES) developed to inform a health technology assessment (HTA). In this chapter, several additional topics that are not specific to DES are covered. The chapter begins with a delineation of what needs to be documented during the process of designing, constructing, validating, and analyzing a model. This is followed by a brief explanation of a tool not much used for HTA DES, the animation of a simulation. Software, both specialized and general, is described next. The chapter concludes with extensions of DES; first a short section on agent-based models (ABMs) and then the various hybrids with other techniques are considered.
