ABSTRACT
This chapter is a review and speculation on the past, present, and future of research within the disciplines of geography and geographic information science on the nature of space, time, and space-time, or what might be called spatiotemporal geography. The review is not intended to be comprehensive; indeed, there are several excellent extant review papers to which the reader is referred. Instead, the principal computational, geographic, and philosophical issues and challenges are the focus. Central to these is the geographic (and cartographic) concept of scale, which has profound implications for research in space-time, as in geography generally. The chapter covers rst space, then time, and then examines their integration before concluding with some observations about contemporary research.
