ABSTRACT

Remotely sensed radiances from planetary surfaces or atmospheres reveal elds of immense complexity with structures typically spanning the range of scales from planetary to submillimetric: 10 or more orders of magnitude. The natural framework for analyzing, modeling, and indeed understanding such hierarchies of structures within structures is scale invariance: fractal sets and multifractal elds.
