ABSTRACT
Scientists and engineers of the time seemed to feel that they understood the basic underlying principles of these devices. Because of that, some people had come to believe that science was “over”; that everything that there was to discover had already been discovered. All that remained to be done was to improve the precision of measurements, and, by incremental, evolutionary design changes, to improve the speed and efciency of devices already in existence. But, surprises were lurking.
