ABSTRACT
The motto of this chapter was used by Immanuel Kant to describe the spirit of the enlightenment-a philosophical movement that championed mankind’s intellect and encouraged the personal use of reason in all matters of inquiry. In describing the enlightenment, Kant explicitly challenges his readers to have the courage to use their own intellect without depending on the counsel or approval of an expert or authority.
