ABSTRACT

To capture and share patient data efficiently, providers need an electronic health record (EHR) that stores data in a structured format. Structured data allow patient information to be easily retrieved and transferred, and also allow the provider to use the EHR in ways that can aid patient care. In general, it is important that the EHR system offers the necessary technological capability, functionality, and security to help meet the meaningful use criteria. It is also important that the electronic health IT products and systems used are secure, can maintain data confidentially, and can work with other systems to share information.
