ABSTRACT

Many studies have established where melatonin synthesis occurs. The rst location in which melatonin synthesis was described was the pineal gland (Lerner et al. 1959). The pineal gland, which is the main source of this neurohormone, is the source of melatonin distributed via blood vessels to most other organs; nevertheless, there are other tissues where the synthesis of melatonin has been detected, including ocular tissues.
