ABSTRACT

Physical inactivity is a leading contributor to overall mortality in the United States.19 Fewer than half of all American adults meet recommended physical activity levels of 150  minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week.1,15 As a result of this pandemic of physical inactivity, nearly 70% of adult Americans are currently classied as being overweight

or obese.16 The role of physical inactivity in health and disease remains a major focus of Healthy People 2020,17 an ongoing initiative designed to promote wellness and prevent disease in the general population (Table 7.1).
