ABSTRACT

The skin offers protection from our harsh environment while we exercise for tness and compete for victory. At times, we take this pliable, protective barrier for granted, potentially leading to our inability to participate. Athletes and clinicians need to be aware of the most common dermatological conditions that may arise within certain sports and types of exercise. Early recognition and treatment of these dermatological disorders can prevent degradation in performance, speed recovery for earlier return to play, and obviate further spread to a team member or an opposing athlete. The chapter is divided into four main sections: mechanical, environmental, infectious, and miscellaneous dermatological conditions. In-depth descriptions of the most common skin disorders in athletes, along with treatment regimens and primary prevention strategies, are provided (Table 55.1).
