ABSTRACT

In addition to being frustrating to the athlete, the overuse injury cycle can be perplexing for the treating physician. Physicians will face tough questions from athletes such as the following: “Why does my plantar fasciitis come back even after I take a break from running?” “Why is my shoulder impingement not gone after a couple weeks of rest?” “If my Achilles tendinosis is back again, will I ever be able to run pain-free again?” These are all questions that primary care physicians will face, and the intent of this chapter is to give you the tools to answer these questions, to correctly diagnose the problem, and to understand why the “injured” area may not always be the underlying source of the patient’s problem.
