ABSTRACT

HELLP syndrome [haemolysis (H), elevated liver enzymes (EL), and low platelet count (LP)] is diagnosed by laboratory findings consistent with haemolysis, elevated levels of liver function tests and thrombocytopaenia. The BP may be normal or only marginally elevated. HELLP syndrome is considered a manifestation of severe pre-eclampsia and not distinct from this condition. Acronyms for other combinations of effects of pre-eclampsia on different organ systems have not been developed to date.
