ABSTRACT

The nursing position of the pregnant SCI patient is important. In the later stages of pregnancy, the pelvic venous stasis provoked by the supine position makes the right lateral position preferable. This is reasonable to apply to the SCI patient, as long as spinal alignment is maintained. This will require a well-fitting cervical collar in the context of cervical or cervicothoracic injuries; for thoracolumbar injuries appropriate bolsters or padding should be used. Care should be taken to ensure they do not compress or slip gradually allowing the patient’s position to change.
