ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION This chapter encompasses those conditions that are primary disorders of skeletal muscle or that affect the neuromuscular junction. A brief overview of each area is given, followed by the interactions with pregnancy of a number of illustrative disorders. Both the effects of muscle disease on the pregnant mother and fetus and the effects of pregnancy on the mother’s muscle condition need to be considered. At present, there is a lack of knowledge in this field, particularly for the genetic muscle conditions (1), and studies are needed to address this and to inform and improve standards of care in the future.
