The media access control (MAC) lies in the data link (DL) layer. It is an impor-

tant function that controls different nodes to access the same shared communication

media. In this chapter, we first introduce the MAC protocols for different wireless

network standards including IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15.4, IEEE 802.15.6, IEEE

802.16, and IEEE 802.22. Then we highlight some new MAC mechanisms, such

as energy-efficient MAC, cognitive MAC, and relay MAC.
