Elimination and marking behavior

While elimination of manure and urine primarily serves to eliminate end-products of metabolism, it also gives horses the opportunity for intraspecies communication. Stallions in particular can be observed to defecate and urinate on top of another horse’s eliminations. This behavior is denoted as marking or documentation.
