ABSTRACT

Several authors, for example, Bhapkar and K o c h (1968), have

emphasized the difference between factor or explanatory variables

which classify the unit of observation according to a description of

the sub-populat ion of the units to which it belongs (or to the

experimental condit ions which it undergoes), and response variables

which classify according to a description of what happens to the

unit dur ing and/or after the experiment. The data in Table 5.5, for

example, has essentially one response and two factor variables, the

former being the state of the plant after the experiment, alive or

dead, and the latter being time of planting and length of cutting. In

any analysis of such data, the primary interest generally lies i n

assessing how the factor variables affect the response variable.
