ABSTRACT
Preservatives are used in aqueous cosmetics and drugs to prevent microbial contamination. While this has solved the problem of contamination in most instances, it has created other problems. No preservative is free of allergenic potential, and many consumers want "natural" products that do not contain preservatives. Consequently, views on cosmetic preservation and "the greening of cosmetics" are on a collision course.
