ABSTRACT
In the night hours of April 30 to May 1, 1999, a horrific crime takes place near the Frysian town of Veenklooster, a tiny hamlet in the countryside in the north of the Netherlands. After a night of partying, 16-year-old Marianne Vaatstra is found raped and murdered in a paddock just a few kilometers from her parent’s home where she lived. For a long time all suspicions were directed to the asylum center located near Veenklooster but police were never able to close the case. The rape and murder remained unsolved for years and had a great impact on the Dutch society, especially since the perpetrator was never caught. Several investigative journalists performed elaborate analyses of the case and the investigation, and concluded that police had put all their efforts into solving the case in hopes of finding the killer, but to no avail.1-3 The case turned cold.
