ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the concept of mental health and describes how it differs from mental illness. It explains the core concepts in psychological and social well-being and how they relate to mental health promotion. The chapter shows how the Ottawa Charter relates to mental health promotion. It describes the interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral nature of mental health promotion. The chapter discusses the role of the mental health nurse, with reference to evidence-based approaches. The right to good mental health and well-being can be considered a matter of justice, insofar as it is necessary for optimum living and therefore an entitlement. Mental health promotion is an integral and imperative part of the nurse’s caring role, and it is therefore important for all nurses to have a thorough understanding of this sphere. Having knowledge of the differences between concepts of mental illness and mental health will guide nurses in understanding what their role entails and the outcomes that they hope to achieve.
