ABSTRACT

Nontraditional franchise restaurants are those franchises that are not con-ventional freestanding restaurants. They can be double-drive-thrus, dual or multiple concepts, kiosks, stands, and can be in combination with other businesses. Nontraditional franchises can therefore be regarded as the wave based on the latest trends. McDonald’s, KFC, Hardee’s, and all other major restaurant franchises now have some form of nontraditional franchises. Nontraditional franchises have become a major part of the development strategy of many existing franchises. They are also referred to as express or satellite

restaurants, signifying fast service, or at least a different type of service than the original concept. Most of these outlets have scaled-down menus, casual counter service, lower staff costs, and limited dining area and kitchen space. Self-service products and take-out services are emphasized.
