ABSTRACT

Sulfonamides came on the drug scene in the 1930s when azo dyes research indicated their antibacterial effectiveness. While more than 4,000 were tested, only about a dozen found use in therapeutic medicine. The sulfonamides include

1. Aniline-substituted ones such as the sulfanilimides 2. Prodrugs such as Sulfasalazine 3. Nonaniline ones such as Mafenide

Sulfonamides are used less now than they were in the past since many bacterial strains have developed an effective resistance against them, although a few are still used in topical ointments and ophthalmic solutions.
