ABSTRACT

Resins are complex mixtures of resin acids, resin alcohols, resinotannols, esters, and resenes. They are insoluble in water but dissolve in alcohol and other organic solvents.

Resins may occur as

1. Oleoresins-homogeneous mixtures with volatile oils 2. Gum resins-mixtures with gums 3. Balsams-resin mixtures with cinnamic and benzoic acids 4. Glycoresins-found with glycoside combinations

Some resinous products are used in pharmacy. Podophyllum resin is sometimes used as a caustic for papellomas.
