ABSTRACT

In his seminal work on human motivation and personality, Maslow (1970) distinguished two aspects of self-respect or self-esteem: rst, self-respect, which stems from personal experiences of achievement and condence in the face of the world; and second, reputation and prestige, which we receive from others in the form of respect. e two forms of respect may re-inforce each other. Taken together, they constitute to a large extent what philosophers call human dignity (Nussbaum 2004; Ashcroft 2005). erefore, let us begin by looking at the concept of dignity and see how philosophers view self-respect and respect by others as integral components of human dignity.
