ABSTRACT

Bromocriptine is a dopamine agonist. It decreases the production of prolactin from the pituitary gland by stimulating dopamine receptors and is therefore used for the management of hyperprolactinaemia. Bromocriptine is also used to stop milk production when this is required (e.g. after a stillbirth). Domperidone is the dopamine antagonist that can be used to increase milk production. Colostrum is the breast milk produced in the first week, which is especially high in protein from immunoglobulins and has a high concentration of lymphocytes. Group B streptococcus is associated with neonatal sepsis, urinary tract infection during pregnancy and postpartum endometritis.
