ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the transmission performances of modulation formats, including discrete phase, continuous phase, amplitude shift keying, partial response duobinary, and multicarrier orthogonal modulation are compared. First, a summary of amplitude shift keying (ASK), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) of various FWHM pulse widths is presented. Continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) and minimum shift keying (MSK) formats are contrasted with discrete phase shift keying and then the duobinary. The potential multicarrier format orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is then contrasted to all those modulation formats and, finally, the specific roles of electrical equalization in coherent and incoherent detection systems is given.
