ABSTRACT

Once recruited, officers have to handle informants and this takes them into an environment that is a potential ethical minefield. In part, this is due to the fact that most informants are still active in terrorist or criminal activity. The officer handling the informant will know this and the question is to what level can the informant be permitted to continue with their activity? The informant cannot suddenly disassociate themselves from their circles and stop their practices as they may point the finger of suspicion from their associates that the person is an informant.
