ABSTRACT
Bridges are often wide relative to their length and cannot be modelled accurately as beams or frames. Fortunately, slabs can be idealised using one of a number of well-proven methods and analysed using widely available analysis programs. To understand the basis of such programs and their limitations, it is necessary to rst consider the theory of bending of plates.
