Introduction

As shown in Figure 1.1, all parts of the bridge over the bearings are referred to as superstructure, whereas parts below the bearings are referred to as substructures. The main body of the bridge superstructure is known as the deck and can consist of a main part and cantilevers, as illustrated. The longitudinal direction is dened as the direction of span, and transverse is the direction perpendicular to it.
