ABSTRACT

Histology is a branch of medical science that focuses on the microstructure of tissues and their cellular composition. It is basically anatomy at the microscopic level, based on the morphology of tissue after it has been chemically preserved, mounted in a solid (usually wax), and serially cut using a mechanical bladed tool called a microtome. The end result of this process is a 5-10 µm slice of tissue, where the 3D structure has been kept intact. Once prepared, the slices can be imaged using various types of microscopy.
