ABSTRACT

Lag model 4. Describe the constituents of bone, dentin, and enamel and their hierarchical

structures 5. Be familiar with two dental composites: resin-based composite and glass-

ionomer composite

Composite materials have been known in various forms throughout the history of mankind. Clay-straw composites have been known for more than 5000 years, whereby natural fibers produced from various plants were mixed with clay in water and used as a composite to make bricks for walls and shelters (Figure 11.1). In this application, the polymer constituent (natural fibers) toughens the ceramic matrix (clay), improving the mechanical integrity of the clay, which would otherwise develop many cracks during the mud-drying process (slurry of the composite).
