ABSTRACT
It is not only valuable to analyse your own performance but also to analyse the performance of others. You will have no difficulty in finding examples of poor performance. Any technical conference will provide examples of most faults. Committee meetings are useful in this respect but don’t allow yourself to be distracted from the business of the meeting by analysing the speakers. Notice that it is not sufficient to judge a speaker to be poor, you must establish why. The checklist in Appendix 3 can be used to aid the analysis. Analysis should not be restricted to examples of poor performance. Watch out for speakers who are particularly effective, not only real-life examples but also speakers on television. Again, attempt to analyse why the presentation achieves a high standard. Note particular techniques that a certain speaker may use.
