ABSTRACT

Wastewater redirected through a treatment regimen making it safe and suitable for human consumption has taken the forefront in identifying novel methods of augmenting presently limited water supplies. is process known as wastewater reuse has many drawbacks, especially the general sense of the population that

this is a “last resort” and only acceptable when all other methods of obtaining potable water have been exhausted. e public health ocer in a community dealing with decisions regarding wastewater reclamation must be comfortable in assessing the science available to him or her to ensure that the public safety is given the highest level of consideration. e choice of what to measure to ensure this level of safety must be weighed in the

Preface Under certain critical conditions, communities may have to commit to using domestic wastewater in order to supplement a potable water source to meet domestic needs. e safety of this water will be called into question by residents and local public ocials, especially the water operations manager and public health director. Certifying or guarantying the safety of this alternate domestic water supply will require extensive testing of the treated water and vigilance within the community to ensure public condence in their water. is chapter deals with the means used by local ocials to ensure safe water when a community must employ wastewater reclamation/reuse to solve demand for a sucient supply.
