The documents CM personnel rely on have been leveraged forward from decade to decade, with little broadening of the applicability of the terms and the underlying concepts behind them (see Section 7.3.1). Methods, technologies, markets, viability of market solutions, and tools used are constantly evolving. The view point that the customer dictates the level of control required to manage the configuration of a product, while true in the case of contractual obligations, often falls short of the entire scope of management involved.
